Most girls start to menstruate between ages 10 and 15 years. The average age is 12, but every girl's body has its own schedule. Although there's no one right age for a girl to get her period, there are some clues that menstruation will start soon.
Typically, a girl gets her period about 2 years after her breasts start to develop. Another sign is vaginal discharge fluid (sort of like mucus) that a girl might see or feel on her underwear. This discharge usually begins about 6 months to a year before a girl gets her first period.
You will probably feel some moderate symptoms when you first get your period. You may notice that you feel bloated or uncomfortable. This is caused by water that your body retains during menstruation.
Other signs that you might start your period include a slight headache, leg ache or backache for a few hours. The most common symptom of getting your period is cramping. You may feel abdominal cramping, similar to a stomach ache for the first few days of your period.
Talk to your Mum to get you some over-the-counter pain medication, such as Advil or Tylenol, for the pain if you experience cramping during your first period. You may notice some emotional changes too before your period. You may feel tense, angry, or sad because of the hormones your body is releasing. Don
