What should I do? Need advice about relocating alone?!

Question: Well the only time I have ever lived away from home was when I went away to college and then I came back home after it was over. I've done research, online only, and think I want to relocate from NJ to Chicago, IL. There's no places near here with good jobs, and I want to be out on my own. I have never been there before and can't afford to go and "just check it out." I'm thinking of selling my car and getting the money from it and using it to find a place in Chicago for a few months and hopefully a job within that time frame. my family is saying I won't be able to live that far away and make it on my own. They are saying not to even think about moving that far and it's kinda scaring me. I think I could do it. I'm in my late 20s, no kids, not married yet. I could get between $5,000-$6,000 for my car. I absolutely hate driving and in Chicago I've been told and read several times you don't need a car. what do you all think about this? I need advice from people outside the situation. TY!

I live in the Chiacagoland area, but not in the city itself. I have found that is better for a single woman to live in a suburban area. Forest Park, Illinois and Oak Park, Illinois literally boarder Chicago. There is plenty of public transportation, but a car would still be advisable. Both communities are diverse. When you relocate, try to link up with a church or nice social organization to meet people. I would strongly advise against moving to the Chicago area before you find a job. The money that you save up will be burned up quickly. Try to find something before you move. For a young, single woman, Forest Park or Oak Park would be nice. Best wishes.

that well probably work. I hope things will go great for you.
Good luck!

I'd say go for it, Its your life and your young. I'm planning of in a few years (to young atm) moving to Australia and its amazingly far from Scotland UK.
I'm sure if your family loves you and as they think It doesn't work out, I'm sure they will support you and help you if it doesn't work out.
If you feel your able and happy about doing it then GO!!
(Hope this helps)

OK, you are right about not needing a car in Chicago, the buses or trains go everywhere even through the suburbs.
I understand you wanting to move far on your own. It might be easier to go to the biggest city near you. Atleast to start out. Then go farther from there. Then you know people close enough in case you ever needed help with anything.
I am from Chicago but now live in Oklahoma getting ready to move to Florida. You can do anything you set your mind to. There are plenty of jobs in Chicago!!!!!!! It can be a tough place when you don't know anyone. If you go STAY AWAY from the drugs. And be care full about what neighborhood you live in.
Are you wanting to move down town Chicago or one of the cities around it?
