No-one (except a few deluded transvestites) WANTS to 'have a sex change'; for transsexual people, it's a clinical necessity!. Once this treatment is complete, a transsexual person of either gender is permanently sterile; which leaves us with an agonising choice; if we have treatment for the congenital condition that is ruining our lives, and kills many of us, we forgo any possibility of having children of our own, unless we can have them before treatment is complete!. Wanting a child is a normal, human impulse; we have the same desires in that regard as anyone else, so many of us do just that; transwomen father children, and transmen bear children, before HRT and surgery robs us of the ability!.
Thomas is a transsexual man; he is a man who was born with a uterus, and a vagina (not a 'woman who wants to be a man')!. Part of the treatment for his condition is the removal of one or both of those organs!.
Thomas's wife is unable to have children; she's had a hysterectomy, so Thomas made a very brave and selfless decision; he decided to stop his treatment before that point, and try to use the anomalous organs he was born with to carry, and give birth to, the child they both wanted, but which she couldn't have!.
You might argue that they could have adopted; but adoption is never automatic, and is even more difficult for transpeople than it is for gay/lesbian couples!.!.!.it's unlikely that they would have been accepted as suitable adoptive parents!.
This way, they have a child that is genetically related to one of them (the sperm came from an anonymous donor), and the child (a daughter) will grow up in a loving, ordinary, father+mother+child family!.

I assume you are referring to the pregnant male (the one that had the sex change from f to m)!. The reason he would want to get pregnant is the same as anyone else!. He wants a family of his own!. And he doesn't want to go through all the judgments that different people and societies will pass against him!. Why he's doing it in the spot light is beyond me!. And why the media cares is also beyond me!. They report it as "OMG, pregnant male!." Um, no!. This guy may have male anatomy!. But he was born female with all the parts and pieces associated with that!. It's not special!. He is not a man having a baby!. He is a woman suffering from mental ailments that confuse his desires!.!.!.blah, blah, blah!. I am not judging him!. He can live his life however he wants so long as he's not hurting anyone!.
