The thought of going for a smear test haunts me!. I'm really squeamish and just the thought of it makes me want to cross my legs!. I try to avoid them at all costs and I cry when I'm there!. It sounds ridiculous, but I tense up every time like I cant control myself, it really embarrasing!. The nurse tells me to relax but I cant!. Im the same, the thought of even using tampons makes me want to pass out but the odd thing is, im totally fine having sex! Ive not been for one yet, i really should because when it all comes down to it whats worse - a few seconds discomfort or something much more serious involving hospital!?!? Just keep that in mind - "its for the best - better safe than sorry"!. Try not to get worked up about it, really try and think about other things, esp something that has really made you laugh etc!. You could even take your ipod with ur fave commedian on or something, listen to it in the waiting room and then when you go in, just say to the doc u wanna take your mind off it (explain how you feel) and just listen to that whilst its being done so your mind is distracted!. In time you'll get used to it then you'll be thinking "what was i even worried about!" :) Good luck xxWww@Answer-Health@Com

Think of a really hot doctor doing it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I dont have this issue, but I am a little emarassed just because its the doctor that you see 2 or 3 times a year, weird!! I just look at it as if something would be wrong with me I want to know!. I dont want to die because I was too weirded out !. You know!?!? Just look at it, as these apointments can save your life!. I know this is extreme, but maybe it will help =)
good luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

The best thing to think, is that if you dont have a smear youmay subject yourself to something more squemish in the future!.

Is it the speculum that scares you or the sample itself!.

All they do nowadays is rub a flexible plastic brush on the cervix!. In the past they would scrape a wooden stick!.

Deep breathing will help, but if you have any specific fears talk to someone!. (e!.g!. if you have you had a bad sexual experience!.!.!.)

They are extremely important, I hope to god you have at least had one, because cervical cancer, is more common, and the earlier its picked up the better!.

All the bestWww@Answer-Health@Com

Just remember these appointments are for your health!.

I went at age 11, was a virgin until age 21, and I am 34 now!. I hate the appointments, but I reluctantly go!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i'm so scared to have to go through that!. but i'm 15, and not sexually active!. but i'm afraid that the doc will be like!.!.!. "ahhhh!.!.!." or something i dunno just nerve wracking!. just think about your doctor having seen many many va-jay-jays before and yours is nothing to get nervous about him/her seeing!. =] hope i helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Take deep breaths and close your eyes!.

Curious why they make you squeamish- do you get this way when you have sex as well!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm 19 and not sexually active so I've never had one and I never want to have one!.!.!. that doesn't mean I won't!.!.!.I think I'd want someone important to me/who cares about me to come with me because
1!. it would help me feel more comfortable and relaxed
2!. I think that doctors would be more gentle + careful that way!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Here's a tip to help you!. Just imagine you don't go for your smear test, and a couple of years down the line you find out you have cancer of the womb!.

For the next 12 months you will be subject to WEEKLY examinations, painful surgery, regular chemtherapy, and radiotherapy, regular checkups, and smear test follow ups, and instead of having smear tests every 3 years, it will be every 6 months from now on!. How does all that sound!?!?!?
Open your legs and just let them flop, it just might save your life!.!!!
Just wait till you get pregnant, your knickers are never on!!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It isn't something we do because we enjoy!. Just something we've got to do to know if we might get cancer!. Just think of soemthing else while it's going on!. It's over in a few mins!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's not the most pleasant experience but shouldn't hurt you!. The doctor is trained to do this proceedure and has done so hundreds of times!.
I think what makes us feel scared is the unknown and the vulnerability of the proceedure really!.
But it is a neccessity to find out if there is anything not quite right or to infact check everything IS well!
Don't avoid the tests just for the sake of feeling squeamish!.

I hate needles but as have A rhesus neg blood, had to have loads blood tests done when pregnant!. So consider the smear rather tame really!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had a fear as a nurse rammed a speculum into me and I was still a virgin, it was boiling hot and normally it's cold right!? She was evil! I live in a small town and someone behind the curtain was my school and she heard me tell her I was still a virgin!.

I read in one magazine a girl thought she was spraying deodorant, but she picked up the wrong can it was spray glitter, the gyno said 'Wow you didn't need to make such an effort!.'

Nobody enjoys going for smears (that I know of anyway) the nurse said to me 'Who would be a woman!?' I would say either take your i-pod and listen to some music before hand and when there are doing it look up to the ceiling and visualise something nice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When you go for your smear insist that the nurse uses a virgin speculum which is the smallest and lots of lubricant!. This way you won't even feel it!. Also take along some of your favourite music in an MP3 player or similar and this will help to relax you!. Or you could take along a best friend or boyfriend who would sit at your head and hold your hand they would not see anything as you would be covered by a blanket!. Hope this helps!. And always remember that by having regular smears it could save your life one day!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
