Hi,
Oophorectomy (or ovariectomy) is the surgical removal of an ovary or ovaries!. It is a form of sterilization!. Removal of the ovaries in women is the biological equivalent of castration in males!.

In the case of humans, oophorectomies are most often performed due to diseases such as ovarian cysts or cancer; basically to reduce the chances of developing ovarian cancer or breast cancer; or in conjunction with removal of the uterus!.

Basically, oophorectomy is the removal of one, or both the ovaries, while oophorocystectomy is the removal of an ovarian cyst!. An ovarian cyst is any collection of fluid, surrounded by a very thin wall, within an ovary!. Any ovarian follicle that is larger than about two centimeters, as in your case, is termed an ovarian cyst!. It can be as small as a pea, or as large as a cantaloupe!.

Finally coming to laparotomy; it is a surgical procedure involving an incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity (not the removal of an ovary, like in oophorectomy) to cure a disease!. It is also known as coeliotomy!.

There are 3 types of laparotomy:-
In diagnostic laparotomy, the nature if the disease is unknown, and laparotomy is deemed the best way to identify the cause!.

In therapeutic laparotomy, a cause has been identified (e!.g!. peptic ulcer, colon cancer) and laparotomy is required for its therapy!.

Usually, only exploratory laparotomy is referred to as a surgical operation by itself; and when a specific operation is already planned, laparotomy is considered merely the first step of the procedure!.

Hope my explanation was useful to you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
