As mentioned in other answers, it's the thin piece of skin inside your vagina that is broken by sexual intercourse, masturbation or using tampons!. However, I would not agree with the statement that it hurts for days afterwards - if you have already had gentle masturbation, for example, the initial penetration will not feel as intense!. Admittedly, it does hurt slightly at first, but the intensity and the duration of this differs for different women!.
