My mum had a biopsy on?!

Question: My mum had a biopsy on!?
Friday, she had a scan and mammogram too!. She didnt tell us about it but the consultant told her to go back next Friday for the result and added that from what he'd already seen, he thought it was "highly likely" that the lump was cancerous so she told us that night and I'm going with her for the results (she's a single mum to us,so no dad to go with) What happens now!? could the consultant still be wrong!? if not, whats next!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

OK, this is going to be basically the hard cold facts!. So I'll say now that I'm sorry to hear about your mum's situation!.

Yes, the consultant COULD be wrong, but remember he is highly trained in his speciality and there are certain characteristics which make a breast lump more likely than not to be cancerous, and he will have taken this into consideration when he told your mum!. If he was doubtful, he would not have told her it was likely to be cancer, because then he would risk panicking her over nothing!. So I'm sorry, but if he said based on clinical suspicion that it was highly likely to be cancerous, then I'd say it's about 90% chance that it will be!.

Basically treatment depends on the type of cancer, the size of it and whether it has spread anywhere or not!. There are 3 main treatments of breast cancer:

1!. surgery - sometimes just removal of the lump, sometimes removal of the lump, some tissue surrounding it and some lymph nodes, sometimes a full mastectomy (removing the whole breast)!.

2!. chemotherapy - sometimes they will give IV drugs to destroy the cancer cells, sometimes it's just a tablet you take which counteracts the hormones in the body if the tumour is hormone sensitive!.

3!. radiotherapy - where they destroy the cancer cells using strong x-rays!.

Basically, it's impossible for anyone to guess what your mum's treatment might be, but when she has the appointment on Friday the consultant will go through the various options with her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
