Answers:
the "sugar pills" are to allow you to have your period!. and you should still be covered my the hormones that you had taken during the rest of the month!. A women gets pergant during ovulation, which takes place earlier in the month (typically around day 14 of a 28 day cycle)!. The pill works by 1- preventing a women from ovulating, 2 - preventing the fetus from implanting in the uterus (starving the fetus of vital life support)!. 3 - and lastly by increasing the mucus your body produces natural which makes it harder for the sperm to reach it's desired location (the egg)Www@Answer-Health@Com

When you take an entire pack of birth control pills the right way (starting with the three weeks of hormones and then the week of nonactive sugar pills, and assuming you don't miss more than one active pill) the active pills stop ovulation!. So by the time you go on the nonactive week, ovulation has already been prevented and you are safe from pregnancy as long as you start your next pack of pills on time!.

However, you usually aren't protected from pregnancy until the second month of taking the pills!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The regular pills are the ones that have hormones in them to stop you from being able to get pregnant your sugar pills are to make you have your period!. Just so you know the pill needs to be taken for one month consistently before it is completely effective against getting pregnant plus you need to take it everyday on time if you miss a day and do start being sexually active then you need to use another form of birth control as well for three days after the missed pill!. You are not more likely to get pregnant on the sugar pills!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you've taken the pills at the proper time each day for the whole month, the 'sugar' pills are not a lapse in your protection!.
They coordinate with your monthly cycle!.

However, if you screw it up it's not like the sugar pills have some magic protection themselves - you HAVE to take BC pills correctly consistently to have the level of protection they advertise!.

Also, realize they give NO protection against STDs, so a condom is still necessary!.
Also, they are not perfect!. Be aware of your body!. Don't just assume any protection is perfect!. They lessen the risk, greatly, they are NOT 100% though!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The sugar pills are the week you have your period and you aren't going to get pregnant on your period!. As long as you take the actual pills (not sugar) regularly, chance of pregnancy is extremely slim!. Things like antibiotics and such can make the pill less effective though so you need to make sure you would use back up protection for one whole cycle after you miss a pill or take antibiotics!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
