Is my medicine making me gain weight?!

Question: Is my medicine making me gain weight!?
I've been taking metformin, levothyroxine, and prevacid for the past two months!.

Metformin is for my insulin level, levothyroxine is for my thyroid, and prevacid is for my acid reflux!.

Since taking them, i've gained 20-30 pounds!.
I don't understand why i've been gaining weight because i've been eating healthier and lighter, i've been exercising more, and ive made sure not to eat a few hours before bedtime!.
But I still continue to gain weight!.

Hi there!! If you are on metformin, then you are a diabetic!.
The levothroxine is for hypothyroidism!. Either one of those diseases can affect your metabolism which, of course, affects your weight!.

I don't know what "healthier and lighter" means, but I will only say this: If you are diabetic, you really need to be watching your carbohydrates, as carbs turn to sugar (glucose)in your body because glucose if what your body's cells burn for energy!.

Eat too many carbs and what your body doesn't burn will be stored as fat!. Simple as that!.

If you are a woman and you eat more than 1500 calories/day, then you are eating too much!. Your levothyroxine dosage may not be enough to raise your metabolism enough for you to burn your calories appropriately!. You need to discuss this with your doctor!. Ask him where your TSH levels are at and he may say "they are normal"!. I only say about that is there is a range of normal!. Are you close to the low side of normal or the high side of normal!.

What do you do for exercise, and how much!? What do you weigh now and how tall are you!?

If you wish to answer these and if you want a copy of a good diet to follow, just email me and I'll be happy to help you further if I can!. Good luck to you!.

If you have type 2 diabetes, taking metformin will probably control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood better than not taking any medicine or just eating healthily!. And unlike many other diabetes drugs, metformin is less likely make you gain wweight!.!.

What is it!?

Metformin is one of a group of drugs called biguanides!.1 You can take it as a tablet or a liquid!. One brand name is Glucophage!. You need a prescription from your doctor to get it!.

Your doctor might tell you to take metformin on its own or with another drug to lower your blood glucose!. For more about this, see Taking two drugs together!.

How can it help!?

If you take metformin, your blood glucose may be better controlled than if you take a dummy treatment (a placebo) or just watch what you eat!.2

Metformin may help lower your haemoglobin A1c level by about one point to two points!.2 3 4 5 Doctors use the haemoglobin A1c blood test to see how well you are controlling your diabetes!.
Over 10 years, your level may be better than if you are just careful about what you eat!.5
Metformin may help you control your blood glucose without making you gain wweight!.!.2 3 4

If you are overweight and take metformin to control your diabetes, you may live longer than if you just try to watch what you eat!.5

Why should it work!?

Metformin helps lower the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood in two ways!.

First, it causes your liver to make less glucose!. This means that less glucose goes into your bloodstream!.
Second, it causes your muscles to use up more glucose from your blood!.

Can it be harmful!?

Metformin can make you feel sick!. Or you might not feel like eating!. It can also give you diarrhoea!. But if you take metformin with food, these side effects may not happen so often!. Or your doctor can start you on a low dose and increase it slowly!.

If you take metformin, you may be slightly more likely to get low blood glucose (hypoglycaemia) than if you just watch what you eat!. But you're less likely to get this than if you take another type of drug called a sulphonylurea or insulin!.5

Rarely, metformin causes a serious side effect called lactic acidosis!. When this happens, you get too much lactic acid in your body!. This chemical makes you feel sick!. You might also nnot feeel likee eatinng, havve a sttomach--ache, throw up, loose weiight and feel very tired!.
