First timer on Birth Control.?!

Question: First timer on Birth Control!.!?
I have my first OB/GYN appt!. at the end of this week!. I'm a bit nervous about it in general & I have some questions about getting on birth control!. I realize I could wait until the appt!. to ask my doc, but I'd like to know from women with personal experience with it (my doc is a man)!.
First off - the shot or the pill!. Which would you recommend!? I know people who swear by one or the other!. But I've also heard nasty things about Depo, and I have my own worries about the pill (I have enough trouble remembering my daily meds that I've taken all my life!) Secondly, will I be started off on birth control (either method) immediately, during my first appt!.!? And thirdly, how long does it take for either method to take effect in my body!?
Thanks so much for the help, guys, I'm REALLY nervous about it all!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Okay, I've been on both!. I highly recommend the pill rather than Depo!. Although it can make you not have a period at all, it can mess up your fertility for up to a year after you get off of it, and it eats away at your bone marrow!. I'm now on the pill Orthotricylin and it's fine!. I have unprotected sex with my boyfriend, and I have not gotten pregnant!. Really, you should go with the pill!. Oh, and Depo causes blood clots from build up of not having a period, I had one, it was SO painful!. It takes two weeks for both to become effective!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well for starters, I am not particularly fond of gettin shots and I could not imagine getting one every three months!.
I am actually very fond of the birth control pill called seasonale!. You only get your period once every three months and they make it in a generic!. I don't know what kind of insurance you have, or if any at all, but I only pay $15 for a three months supply!.
I hope this helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, im a dude but I can tell you what I know!. When my high school gf started the pill it took like two weeks for it to take full effect (i!.e!. no condoms anymore)!. It made her period 3 or 4 days instead of 6 or 7, and her boobs got bigger!. She put a note on her mirror to remind herself to take it every night!. good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Another option you might look into is the Nuvaring!. You insert it once a month (basically like you would a tampon) and you remove it after 3 weeks, have a period the fourth week!. The information packet comes with the website address and you can download a reminder that pops up every time you turn on the computer, so you remember if it is suppose to be in or out!. I LOVE it!. No shots, and you only have to remember once a month!. Depending on insurance or not, this might be a good option for you!. (brother, I sound like I work for them!!)

The Dr will write you an appointment at your visit, regardless of which method you decide on!. Some doctors will give you some free samples, which rocks!. If I remember correctly, it takes about 3 weeks for you to be able to stop using a secondary method of birth control such as condoms!.

Good luck, and don't worry!. It isn't nearly as bad as you imagine it will be!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Choosing a BC method should definitely be discussed with the doc but, my personal preference is the shot because like you- I can never remember to take those stupid pills and it is not very effetive if you only take it once every other day! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do your research though, at very least read all the material they give you in the office for the method you want to try!. I do not see any side effects other than I like to eat more when I've been taking it, but who doesnt like food if my metabolism can handle it!? Another cool thing it does for me is it stops my period so I dont even have to deal with it! It has different effects for different people so it might not effect you the same way!? They should start you on birth control immediately unless you have had unprotected sex since your last period!.!. theyll give you a preg test, maybe give you the shot and then test you again in 2 weeks!. Most docs reccoment that you use back-up protection for 2 weeks for just about any method!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well I haven't tried the shot - I would be too worried that if I didn' like the side effects there wouldn't be anything I could do - it's not like you can stop taking it once it's in there! But I can anwser these questions:

-Will you be put on the pill at your first visit!?

Usually they ask you to start taking the pill when you have your period!. When I had my appt my period had just finished so I went straight onto them the next day!.

-How long does it take the pill to be effective!?

Well most brands protect you against getting pregnant after you've been on it a week (of course the packet and doctor will tell you all this so you can double check)!.
But!.!.!. as far as your body getting 'used to' the new hormone pattern, I got very depressed and anxious the first week of every month I was on the pill!. But after 3 months of that it went away - the doctor told me most side effects will calm down after 3 months!.
Then, when I changed how i was taking it to skip every second period (so I now take 7 weeks of hormones then have a week off when I have my period) that cycle happened again - it took 3 cycles (6 months) for my body to adjust to the new pattern!.
Nowadays I don't feel any different to the way I did when I wasn't on the pill but it takes a little while for your body to get used to it, and in some cases you'll need to change brands to find one that suits your body!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

OK! i recommend the pill over the shot because one of the side effects of the shot is depression!. it would suck to be depressed for 3 months!. if you take the pill when you brush your teeth in the morning, you'll be fine!. i know people who set an alarm for it!. when it's something that important, it's not very likely that you would forget to take it!. you could start the pill right after your appt, that's what i did!. it takes a week to take effect though so use a condom for the first week!. you're going to feel extremely nauseated for the first week of the first three months on the pill, but that goes away and the results are wonderful!. i have clear skin, my periods are lighter and very regular, i went from an A cup to a B cup!. have fun!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's a really scary situation to go to the gyno but you'll be alright!.
The only thing about birth control is don't miss the pills (if you use pills) and don't smoke!. The doctor will tell you this!.
There are several different types of birth control!. Usually the shot is one type of hormone, progesterone, and not all doctors recommend this and the pill has both progesterone and estrogen; both hormones used to ovulate!. I would recommend the pill!. You get used to taking it everyday and it's easy!. Depending on the shot, it usually lasts for a few months!.
There is also intra-uterine devices which is a small little device inserted into the vagina that produces hormones to prevent pregnancy, similar to birth control!.
Doctors usually tell you to take the birth control starting on a Sunday, if you use the pill, and you take it at the same time everyday!. The doctor will give you a sample pack of pills to take and then he will give you a prescription to send in to a pharmacy or where ever you get your meds from and then when you run out of the sample pills, you start on the new pack!.
It should take affect after a a few weeks of taking it!.
Some people have different side effects like bleeding in between periods but personally, I never had problems with that!.
The only bad side effect I had was gaining a little weight!.
You'll be fine!. Just put your game face on and just endure a few minutes of discomfort!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try not to be nervous - usually these appointments seem scarier than they actually are!

I have never had a Depo shot - I have heard some bad things about it, plus if your body reacts badly to it, you have to wait 3 months for it to wear off!

The pill is ok - as long as you remember to take it everyday!. There's many different pills you can try!. I've tried heaps, mainly because I had bad period pains and my doctor was trying to find one that would cause less pain during a period!.!.!.sick of trying them I got an Implanon implant which is great!. It sits under the skin on the inside your arm (inserted with local anaesthetic, I didn't feel a thing!) and because it's in your blood stream, you don't have to worry about it being ineffective if you have diarrhoea or vomiting (the pill is less effective in these instances)!. It releases the same amount of hormone each day!. It's the best thing I've had so far - can get irregular bleeding (I do about every 6 - 8 weeks or so)!.

Have a chat to your doctor anyway, he will be able to tell you what the best option is for you, good luck, and don't stress!Www@Answer-Health@Com
