You will know - the more you use it, the more you understand your flow!. For me, the first 2 days, I know it's going to be heavy so I'll change it every 3-4 hours!. Then the next two days, I'll leave it in 6 hours (i think thats the max)!. To be safe, just change every 3 hours!.

Ok I don't have my period yet but I know that you should never leave a tampon in for more then 6 hours, because after that you are at risk for Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) and it can be FATAL! I don't want to scare you but TSS is very serious!. You can be healthy with a tampon though by making sure you never leave it in for more then 6 hours!. Also, if the tampon starts leaking because it is so filled with blood it cannot catch anymore, then that is time to take it out also! Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
Either when it starts to leak or before 6 hours are up!. You should also change it everytime you urinate, because sometimes the urine can wick up from the string and contaminate the tampon!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
