Question: A very odd question( probably best for doctors or nurses)!?
ok, i know this is an odd question but im curious!. When i had bunion surgery last year while i was at the surgery center, and they were preparing me for the surgery, like giving me an iv the lady asked if i had started my period, and the last time i had it!. why do they ask you that when you have operations!. I mean my foot dosnt deal if ive started my period!. Also im getting nose surgery next month at a surgery center, and will be put all the way to sleep with anastesia!. will they ask me if ive started my period cause i really dont like to talk about it!. Lastly when i had x rays for the scoleosis screening the lady was interested in the last date i started my period!. Why do all the doctors ask this question!. ecspecially if your getting surgery that dosnt deal with this subject!. mature answers only, thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
The reason they ask before surgery is because the anesthesia can effect the baby, so by knowing the date of your last period they can predict whether or not you may or may not be pregnant!. It's a legal thing to cover their butts!. The reason they ask when getting an x-ray is to protect the baby too, but in this case if you are pregnant or they think you might be they will cover you with a lead shield to protect the baby!. Again, it is for legal reasons and something they must do!. Just know that they will ask you and have the date ready for them!. Being prepared and knowing ahead of time should make it easier for you!. If you want you can write it on a piece of paper and just hand it to them when they ask or when you first get there!. Knowing the last time that you started your period allows the caregiver to make an educated decision on your probability of being pregnant!. If your last menstrual cycle was "two months ago" then they may consider doing a pregnancy test prior to surgery!. Any woman age 11 - 40 or so they will consider of child bearing age and need to make this determination prior to the administering of anesthetics, x-rays, and more medications, etc!. Many medications and procedures are not considered safe for pregnant women!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They want to know if you are pregnant or if there is a slight possiblity because the procedures could harm a fetus!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
