Will Medicare cover the cost of a mammogram screening for a woman over the age o!

Question: Will Medicare cover the cost of a mammogram screening for a woman over the age of 40!?
Answers:
I work in a free standing imaging center!. Medicare will pay for one screening mammogram per calender year!. This means if you have a mammogram on July 23, 2207, you cannot have a mammogram before July 23, 2008!. If you have signs or symptoms (lump, pain, nipple discharge), Medicare will pay for a diagnostic mammogram at any time, and there is no year long wait period!.

Women are allowed to self refer themselves for a screening mammogram, once a year, after the age of 35!. This is one of the standards covered in the Mammography Quality Standards Act, which is a federal act, that was passed by our congress in 1992!. This means you do not need a doctor's order!. All insurances honor this method of self referral!. Some mammography facilities do not allow self referrals, but our office does!.

"Does a patient need to have a doctor refer her to a mammography facility!?

No!. She can have a mammography exam and receive the follow-up report without a doctor's referral!. (This is known as "self referral!.") Before her exam, she should verify that the facility accepts self-referred patients because some facilities do not!."

As long as it is ordered by an MD it should be covered!.
