Answers:
it was actually worse than i imagined, but read first to find out how to deal with it!:

-the speculum hurt way more than i thought! it was a scary metal contraption!. maybe this was because i was a virgin and it was my first exam, or maybe because i am petite!.

-the breast exam hurt for me too, but i have been diagnosed with fibrocystic breasts and have had pain before that too!. i might just be ultra-sensitive about all of these procedures!.

-i didn't feel exposed (and i'm very shy about my body)!. they give you a gown and you lay back all the way, so you can't see anything!. your doctor also sees women all day, and she herself must also have exams, so don't worry about how you look or feel since all women must go through it at some point!.

-they will really probe you about your sexual history, meaning your partners, any activity (or lack of), if you have used any sort of contraceptive before, and it can feel really nervewracking to have to open up to someone about that, but these people won't judge you and you should be as honest as possible so that you can get the proper care!. everything remains confidential, between you and the doctor!. they won't tell your parents unless you want them to!.

-they will test for stds, infections, and look for other abnormalities that may or may not be there!.!.!. it will feel weird, but you'll have great reassurance when everything should come back normal!. if things don't come back normal, at least now you know the steps you can take!.
now for my advice!!

-ask them if they have the plastic speculums available: they are small, plastic, disposable speculums and they are much more comfortable!. i went for my 2nd visit this month at a different doctor's office, and the comfort level was much more bearable!. it wasn't painful this time, but it's always a shocking feeling and takes some adjusting to!. if they can provide you with a plastic speculum, it would really help you, since it doesn't look scary and isn't cold or pinching!.

-ask them to use extra lubricant!. there's no reason why they shouldn't if you ask them, and it will make everything easier!.

-tell them you are anxious about this before the exam begins, ask them what they will do beforehand, and ask if they can tell you what they are doing or planning to do when they do it!. it really helps to know what they're doing step by step, that way you're not just laying there, and you feel a part of what's going on!.

-be strong!! it's a hard exam to do and a hard part of growing up, but i did it and i believe you can too!

good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It wasn't bad!. It was a bit uncomfortable because I was a virgin at 19 and I was nervous, but it went well!.
My first doctor was a woman and my mom was there with me!. I didn't feel "exposed"!. They give you a drape to cover you!.

As long as you relax and realize millions of girls/women go through it, you'll be fine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, it's no fun!. There's a bit of a pinch when they put the speculum in!. I found that it was much easier if I just relaxed and moved my knees the the sides!. I kept thinking I was relaxed, then I realized I was tense!. So I focused very consciously on relaxing, and paid less attention to what the doctor was doing, and that made things easier!. Breathe in!. Breathe out!. Slowly, calmly!. They generally try to make you not feel so exposed--they give you a cloth or paper robe, so the top half of your body is covered, and you can't see your own nakedness because you are separated from it by the thing you're wearing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
