Depo Shot?!

Question: Depo Shot!?
I'm 18 and work in a field (Commercial fishing)with guys, Im the only girl, so I was thinking about getting the shot because we go offshore for 2-4 weeks and its NOT fun having a period when you're working 17+ hour shifts with no breaks!.

Its also a bit embarrassing in a way, just because I know that they know whats going on!.!.!.kinda hard to explain!.

I'm not sexually active, so it's not like I'm only doing this for birthcontrol!.!.!.if I need that, there's always condoms!.

So, i guess, what im asking is, would you recommend this!? Is it safe!? Have you had bad things happen because of it!?

I would like your honest opinion on this!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Depo has tons of side effects, and the bad may outweigh the good!.

The most common side effect is weight gain!. 70% of all users gain some weight, 50% gain significant amounts!. I ended up gaining over 40 lbs while I was on it (I kept eating healthy and exercizing too)!. Menstual irregularities are also very common!. You may stop mentstruating (50% of all users do eventually), but you could also end up bleeding almost non-stop!. That is what happened to my friend!. She bled for all but one week every 3 months!.

Other side effects I had on the shot were migraines, depression, skin breakouts, hair falling out, extremely tender and sore breasts, and no sexual drive!.

Another thing you should seriously consider is the permanent affects on your bones!. Depo has been shown to seriously deplete bone density levels, and it is non-reversible!. That can eventually lead to osteoperosis!.

Plus, if you have bad effects with the shot, you are stuck with it until the shot clears your system (which can take up to 8 months)!.

EDIT: I am on Mirena (an IUD), and I love it!. That being said, it may not be right for you!. Most doctors prefer not to insert it if you have never had a child!. This is because your cervix has never been dialated and your uterus is not used to having anything in it!. That makes insertion much more difficult and painful!. It also increases the risk of expulsion!. It does shorten and lighten periods for most users, and up to 20% of all users stop menstruating completely!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Depo is certainly convenient, but there are other birth control pills that prevent your period from coming monthly!.

I think you should pose the EXACT same question to your physician and ask them what they recommend!.

The biggest complaint women have with depo is that they gain weight!.!.!.I haven't personally known a single woman who didn't, but I am sure they exist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I understand your point about everyone knowing!. Yes, that is somewhat embarrassing in a guy-world even if it is natural!.

1) Personally, I do not recommend Depo-Provera!. Some women report unpleasent side-effects and just to alleviate your menstruation this might be not worth it!.

2) Talk with your doctor about Mirena, which is a hormonal IUD which will also lighter the menstruation and has lower permanent hormone concentration in blood, because it mainly works locally!. About 50% of all users have no period at all after one year of usage; the volume of menstruational blood is decreased by 97% for all users, so that most women have drastically lightened periods or only spotting!.

Mirena is also a very reliable contraception method and a long-term solution since it works for several years!. It is even relatively cheap considering the long time of activity!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

NO! i absolutly would not recomend depo to anyone who would like to have children later down the road, my parents put me on it when i was 13 [just in case] and i stayed o it untill i was 18 by that time doctors began allowing patients to only be on it for two years because it causes your bones to become weak and many women to become less fertile!. i am almost 20 and still have yet to become pregnant after over a year of trying with my hubby!. although i am 2 weeks late, my test are showing neg, so i dont know about my situation at this point!. Just please look it up on the internet and read what others have to say about it first!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
