They use a measuring tape!. they place it at the top of your pelvic bone and run it up the middle of your belly till they feel the top of the uterus!. Mine is at 36cm!. Just under my ribcage!. I'm due with my second in 15 days!.
Edit: it's placed on the outside of your stomach!. It's just a regular measuring tape you can pick up at any fabric store!. Starts at the top of your pelvic bone and runs up over your bellybutton!. The doctor will press on your belly to feel the uterus!. They will measure your uterus at every appointment along with listening to the babies heartbeat!. None of it is painful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The fundal height is the length in cm (using something like a taylor's tape) from the pubic symphephises (the pubic bone) to the top of the uterus!. Its not painful to do!. The length in cm should equal the gestational age in weeks +- 3cm!. If it does not then I usually do an US to check fetal size!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
