Testing for STI's?!
Question: Testing for STI's!?
Hi,
This is probably going to sound insanely stupid (!)!.!.!. but I'm thinking of going for my first STI test and am wondering is it a Thin Prep smear test that checks for this!? Sounds dumb I know, but I don't know the 'technical' name for an STI test (if there is one)!
ThanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
There is no one test for STIs, and it does not involve a cervical (pap) smear, which is a screen test for changes in the cells of the cervix!.
STI screening involves a blood test, which screens for multiple antibodies, a urine check, for chlamydia and urethral or high vaginal swabs, to look for actual organisms!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Basically, when you go for a full STI testing, they will check for:
1!.Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas
2!. Thrush and bacterial vaginosis (which are not sexually transmitted but common)
3!. HIV, Hepatitis B, and syphylis
They will take a full sexual history from you as well as ask you questions about your general health and any medications you are on or may be allergic to!. Then they will take you into an examination room and ask you to undress from the waist down and put on a gown!. You'll have to lie down with your legs in stirrups!. The doctor will have a general look for any lumps or bumps or anything like that, then will put in a speculum so that they can see inside your vagina and the neck of your womb!. They will do a bunch of swabs and then ask you for a urine sample and do a blood test!. It can be a little bit uncomfortable and embarrassing, but it really doesn't hurt, I promise!.
A smear test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix (neck of the womb) which, if left untreated for a long period of time, could potentially become cancerous!. The process of having one done is exactly as I described above with the speculum insertion and then they sweep around the neck of the womb with a little brush - it feels a bit odd, but not painful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
