The non hormonal copper IUD will not change your cycles, but can make your periods heavier!. It can be a bit uncomfortable to insert, but once it's in it is worry-free contraception for 5-10 years!. I love it, especially since hormonal methods don't suit me!. Members of my family also have them, and they wouldn't use any other method!.

One thing I would say is that you but have swabs done before inserion to make sure you're clear "down there", because the risk of infection is greater within the first month!. It can also be expelled after insertion (though this is more likely if you've had kids!. You need to check the strings are there after each period, a nurse will explain - it's easy!.

Also, take paracetamol, ibuprofen, codeine mix BEFORE the insertion!. You wouldn't want to feel it too much! It makes you cramp up like you're having a bad period, so walk it off and then you should feel fine within a day or two!. Some spotting can occur in the first few days/weeks but this settles down!.

The hormonal IUD is actually called the IUS!. The Mirena IUS is available in this country!.!. It contains slow releasing progestogen over 5 years, and this can make your periods lighter or stop altogether (like the mini-pill)!.

Here are a couple of helpful sites I used when I was researching before I had mine!.

http://www!.bbc!.co!.uk/relationships/sex_a!.!.!.

The Mirena (hormonal - try the IUD first though) : http://www!.bbc!.co!.uk/relationships/sex_a!.!.!.

Good luck with yours xxWww@Answer-Health@Com

The IUD won't stop your periods however (trying not to sound pedantic) the Intra-Uterine System otherwise known as the Mirena coil in all likelihood will (which is one of the reasons I had it fitted) - I really like it as it stopped my periods and hence the PMS I suffered terribly from as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
