They wore cloths like diapers and washed them!. If you read in Biblical times the ancient laws forbade women on their periods from handling food or touching people!. And after the period was over they were required to wash themselves to purify themselves!. So I assume they didn't have a real good method of handling their periods! haha!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
They used clothes and rags as pads!. And the girls would have to stay home from school when they got their period!.
In some religions the girls would be locked in a closet because they believed that they got their period because they had sinned and God was punishing them!.

they either got cotton and smashed it down and used it like a pad, or they got old scraps of cloth and used that for pads too, stuff like that!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
I've heard about the staying home (and some tribes women remaining in isolation huts) and also pessaries made from dried absorbent grass being the predecessor to tampons!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
