How To Prepare
Before a Pap test:

Try to schedule the test when you are not having your period, since blood can interfere with the results of the test!. If your bleeding is light, you may still be able to have a Pap test!.
If you have symptoms such as bleeding after intercourse, get a Pap test as soon as you are able to schedule one!.
Do not use douches, tampons, vaginal medicines, sprays, or powders for at least 24 hours before having a Pap test!.

At the beginning of your visit, tell your health professional:

If you are or might be pregnant!.
If you have any reproductive or urinary tract symptoms such as itching, redness, sores, swelling, or an unusual odor or increased vaginal discharge!. If you have been performing regular vaginal self-exams, discuss any changes you have noticed with your health professional!.

If you are using birth control!.
If this is your first Pap test!.
The first day of your last menstrual period and how long your period lasted!.
If you have had surgery or other procedures such as radiation therapy to the vagina, cervix, vulva, or uterus!.
If you have had problems with pelvic exams in the past or have experienced rape or sexual abuse, talk to your health professional about your concerns or fears before the exam!.

No other special preparations are needed before having a Pap test!. For your own comfort, you may want to empty your bladder before the exam!.

How It Is Done
You will need to take off your clothes below the waist and drape a paper or cloth covering around your waist!. You will then lie on your back on an examination table with your feet raised and supported by footrests!. This allows the health professional to examine your external genital area, vagina, and cervix!. You may want to wear socks to keep your feet warm while they are in the footrests!.

The health professional will insert a lubricated speculum into your vagina!. The speculum gently spreads apart the vaginal walls, allowing the inside of the vagina and the cervix to be examined!.

Your health professional will collect several samples of cells from your cervix using a cotton swab, brush (cytobrush or cervix brush), or a small spatula!. Cells are collected from the visible part of the cervix as well as from its opening (endocervical canal)!. In women who do not have a cervix, cells from the vagina are collected if a Pap test is needed!. The cells are smeared on a slide or mixed in a liquid fixative and sent to a lab for examination under a microscope!.

How It Feels
You will feel more comfortable during your Pap test if you and the health professional are relaxed!. Breathing deeply and having a light conversation with your health professional may help you relax!. Holding your breath or tensing your muscles will increase your discomfort!.

You may feel some discomfort when the speculum is inserted, especially if your vagina is irritated, tender, or narrow!. You may also feel pulling or pressure when the sample of cervical cells is being collected!.

Hey, there!

It's shouldn't hurt, but of course it'll feel uncomfortable!. Relax as much as possible and tell your doctor if it hurts!

The tools they use is a vaginal speculum to hold open the vagina in order to be able to reach the cervix, from which the specimen will be taken!. This specimen is taken using a cytobrush or cervicobrush or whatever they call it, it's a little brush which obviously they brush along the cervical lining to get some cells!. Sometimes they use what they call a spatula made of wood, which is actually a small flat wooden stick (no big cooking tools, don't worry!)!.

To be honest, I haven't had one (I'm 20 and not sexually active), but I've learned about it!.

Hope it helps to relieve your anxiousness! Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

they use a speculum, its usually made of plastic and its not too big!. The doc should lube it up so its easier for you!.They insert it into you, and slowly open it up a little so they can take samples and check for anything thats not normal!. Some doctors will take a cell scraping with something that looks like a long handled cotton bud!.!.and this DOES NOT hurt!!!!!! You may bleed a little afterwards, dont panic, this is normal too :)

Pap smears are uncomfortable, and the more tense you are, the more uncomfortable it becomes, so forget your embaarassment, take deep breaths and relax!. Tell your doc its your first one, he/she should do it slowly and gentle, and explain the whole thing as your going along :)

Every woman thats sexually active, from 18 to 70 should have regular yearly or bi yearly pap smears!.

When I was 35, my doc did mine, and was a little concerned, so he sent me to a specialist "just in case"!. I was in hospital 3 days later having laser surgery!.!.!.so they are a great thing to have! When it comes to your health, its no good ignoring anything!. Always go to the doctor and get checked out :)

Good luck hun, and dont be nervous!. It doesnt hurt! :) and never be embarrassed about asking questions like this :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

A pap smear checks for abnormal cells in your cervix, the lowest part of your vagina, for precancerous cells or for infection!. Do this yearly!. The speculum--what they insert to look at the vagina--feels like a metallic tampon that widens as they ratchet it up (they wind=it expands)!. They will ask if you want to look!. Look, it's your body! It does feel weird but it's just part of being female, and nothing to b e embarassed about!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

You sit on the bed they give you a gown and leave the room!. Put it on!. Then they come back and have you scootch to the end of the bed and put your feet in the holsters!.
Then they use whats called a Speculum, they look like Giant Tongs!. They insert it and then then open them, which opens you!. It doesn't hurt, it just feels uncomfortable!. They stay open on there own!.
Then the doctor takes what looks like a giant Q-Tip and swab the inside walls!. And place the swab in a container!. Then they look inside, and sometimes place a finger in there just to feel around to make sure everything is ok!. Then you are done!

Its not that bad and doesn't last that long!. It needs to be done so you can be checked for infections and cervical cancer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

when you get a pap smear they use this thing its either plastic or metal it kinda looks like a duck bill to hold open the vagina and take swabs from you most pap smear that i have have hurt but not really bad mostly uncomfortable a word of advice if you plan on getting one don't get it when your about to start your period because you will be really sore or at least i was hope this helpedWww@Answer-Health@Com

Well you sick with your butt all most hanging off the table covered with a sheet!. They use this long metal are plastic thing that goes in and looks sort of like a clamp!. It opens your cervix for the doctors to look in there!. It feels like pressure and a little weird!. He swabs you to runs tests!. Then they may do a boob examination !. I Can OBGYN's wam bam thank you Mam's!.!. No big deal!.!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have been through it twice!. it was just ok!. Keep a pad as u may bleed a little after the test!. DO NOT worry, their stick will be gentle in touch!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
