You can't!. Mood swings don't necessarily signify a period either!. Mine happen mid month when I'm ovulating!. There are a few ways to know though!. You can ask her!. You can end up in a situation where you're naked with her (if any kind of sex is involved you'll know)!.

If you are good friends with the girl, ask her!. she may be a bit surprised that you're being so forward, but she'll be happy that she can be open about it!.!.!. within reason!.
Failing that, piss her off!. OR be as sweet as a peach!. if she hits you in either situation, it's most likely a yes!.
