You have the basic idea!. The best way to isolate the muscle is while you're actually sitting on the toilet peeing!. Stop and start the flow of urine several times each time you go to the bathroom!. Once you have a good idea of which muscle you're trying to strengthen, you can then do the exercise anytime you want!. At first, just tighten and release, but then you should tighten and try to hold it for 5 seconds and release!. you got it! if you do these exercises daily (do 2 sets of 10 about 2-3 times a day) you will have a very strong pelvic wall plus you will have better chances of not being incontinent when you get older!.
