Are gynocologist's doing anything to make the paps test less painful?!

Question: Are gynocologist's doing anything to make the paps test less painful!?
I know we have to go and get the paps once a year, but I hate going to the gyno's office because is so painful and I get so nervous!. It's been like 4 years since the last time I visited the gyno!. I was just wondering if they were doing something to make the test less painful ( like a new technique, using new tools or something)Www@Answer-Health@Com

i definitely understand what you are talking about!. you can experience a range of different feelings about a pap test including anxiety, pressure, pain, and so on!. i have had many paps with many different doctors and practitioners and every one of them performs the test a little bit differently!.

some doctors are not very concerned with your comfort because they figure it only lases a few seconds, but this is a sign of a doctor with a poor attitude!. a pap test is a procedure that does not have to cause actual pain!.

the best thing you can do is find a doctor or practitioner that performs pap tests frequently--maybe at a planned parenthood or another reputable womens clinic!.

if you have to use a specific doctor and cant change to another one, then i would suggest the following:
1) be assertive and tell yourself that it is your body and you have the right to tell someone if you are experiencing discomfort!.
2) if the insertion of the speculum hurts, tell the doctor to stop and use a smaller speculum
3) if they arent already, ask that the speculum be warmed
4) if the position that you are in on the examination table is uncomfortable, it is possible for a skilled practitioner to perform the test without your feet in stirrups (you just lay with your legs bent at the knee with your feet on the table)

go on and get the test and just remember that if someone you know came up to you and did something that caused physican pain, you would tell them to stop!. you have the right to do this at the doctors office as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't mean to sound like I'm belittling your comment, but what part of a pap do you find so incredibly painful!? Is it the insertion of the speculum, or the collection of the pap itself!.

Most of my patients would describe a pap as either painless, no big deal, a little uncomfortable, a little annoying, kind of embarassing, etc!.!.!. but few would use the description painful!.!.!. as in really hurts!.

Techniques for paps changes from time to time, but bottom line is that you are collecting a few cells from the cervix and the endocervix!. The speculum itself can be a problem, especially for a nervous patient!. And the endocervix can produce a cramping sensation as it's collected!. But again, pain!? Not a common comment we get!.

It's only really painful when you're nervous!. Last time I went, it didn't hurt at all!. The only uncomfortable part of it to me was the speculum!. I was more relaxed!. It's going to be uncomfortable though, obviously!. I don't think there would be another "easy" way to do it!. It's over in a few seconds, so just relax and try not to think about it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know if there is a new technique or not!. But, a pap is not painful at all!. You may feel a little pressure but not pain!. I think its mainly your nerves since it isn't very comfortable!. Other than that i would recommend to go!. Especially if you are sexually active!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There is no other way to do it!. They need to open it up enough to get to the cervix!. It shouldnt be painful though!. Maybe the reason it hurts you is because you are nervous!. Try to relax and not worry about it!. Or find a different doctor that is more gentle!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
