Usually (it varies from girl to girl) you start getting stomach cramps, and sometimes discharge up to a year before you start it!.
When you first start,like the first day, you'll probably use a thinner/light pad !.!.but after a few days, you might need a "heavy" pad (just read the labels on the packages, they tell you what kind of pad it is) I needed a heavy one for quite a while when i started!.
Other girls have very very light periods at first though, so it really depends on the person!.
Once you start, don't be scared or surprised if you skip it for a few months, or if theres only light bleeding for a few days because it takes your body up to two years to get into a normal cycle!.
If you think you might start soon, always carry a smaller thin pad with you!.!.just in case, you know!?

When you first start, you may get cramping in the abdominal area!. When you get your period for the first time, you usually just spot!. Spotting is just brown discharge in your underwear, not a lot, just enough to notice!. The blood doesn't usually come until the second or third period!. Keep some pads on you at all times!. If you notice you are bleeding through them in a short period of time, change it!. Then you will know for next time to use a larger one!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
