My girlfriend is having brown spotting what is it?!

She is on birth control right now called Tri Sprintec and one of the side affects is bleeding between mentrual periods!. She is about a week away from her period but clames to have brown spotting whenever she whipes when she goes to the bathroom!. Her period has come earlier before but its brown this time!.
