WHAT would you suggest for helping with low mood!? I find myself waking up dreading going into work, and my appetite is a little off, which is just not like me!. But I'm definitely not depressed!. Any advice!? Clare Hillman, by e-mail!. W

WE NORMALLY associate this time of year with feeling sunnier, but I've come across quite a few people who are struggling to see the sunny side of life!. It's not that they're depressed (or at least, they don't think they are) but just that they're feeling rather flat!.

Many psychiatrists and GPs dismiss the idea that diet affects mood!.

However, I know through my work that changing what you eat can really make a difference!. I find this medical scepticism exasperating!. Patients often look for a positive way forward which doesn't involve antidepressants, and it's wrong to deny them this!.

Also, the sceptics fail to grasp that many people actually prefer to treat themselves if there are simple but effective strategies!. A good dietitian will be able to suggest constructive ways in which a patient can change their eating habits for the better!.

My first thought is that you are not eating enough 'good' food!. Someone who is feeling low often becomes locked into a destructive eating cycle: white toast, biscuits, chocolates, sweet foods become their staples!.

The problem with these foods is their Glycaemic Index (GI) and their effect on your blood sugar levels!. Foods such as these are high GI, which means they are speedily absorbed by the body, causing your blood sugar levels to rise quickly!.

This then stimulates the release of large amounts of insulin, which brings your blood sugar levels down rapidly!.

Although I'm not saying that this is the sole reason for feeling lousy mood-wise, once you get on to a healthier, lower-GI type of balanced diet, your blood sugar levels will be more constant and, as a result, you'll feel much more stable mood-wise!.

But before you rush to cut out all sweet foods, let me just clarify: the occasional chocolate bar is fine, but if biscuits, chocolates, sweet pastries, ice creams and stodgy puddings are the norm, with little protein, fruit and veg alongside, you're far more likely to find moods swinging all over the place!. (Cut down on caffeine and alcohol, too, as these act as mood suppressants!.) So what should you be eating!? AT THIS time of year, fresh fruits are delicious!.

Although a few of them have a high GI value, such as lychees and watermelon (bananas and most berries are medium, with apples, pears, peaches and plums at the lower end), if you get into the habit of having fresh fruits of all sorts, just small amounts, it will have a much more positive effect on your mood than tucking into a packet of biscuits!.

And the fresh fruits have the additional benefit of containing some vitamin C which boosts your immune system and helps the absorption of other moodaffecting minerals, such as iron!.

The reason I've mentioned iron in particular is because iron deficiency or anaemia is common in women (we lose iron through menstruation) and feeling low is one of the main symptoms!. So it is also worth seeing your GP for a blood test!.

As well as eating too much of the wrong stuff, I wonder if you are getting enough of the moodboosting foods!. These stimulate the production of 'feel-good' brain chemicals, known as endorphins!.

The best endorphin-boosters are foods rich in animal protein, such as turkey, chicken, lean red meat, eggs and cheese!. These contain two amino acids, tryptophan and L-phenylalanine, which encourage the brain to produce endorphins!.

A steak and salad, or a simple roast chicken sandwich, can increase the brain's supply of amino acids and help you feel happier although I should point out that it's not a case of the more you eat, the more ecstatic you will feel!.

But if you can eat a lunch and supper with a good portion of lean meat, chicken, eggs, etc, this should ensure your diet is rich enough in endorphin boosters!.

The B vitamins also have a role to play in boosting mood B6, B12 and folate are the ones you want to concentrate on!. The best sources are: whole grains such as wheat, seafood, poultry, meat and eggs; dairy products, such as milk and yogurt; leafy green vegetables, beans, peas and citrus fruits!.

Finally, try to increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, because these help balance brain chemistry and protect against depression!.

Aim for up to four portions a week of omega-containing oily fish (a portion is 140g), though women of childbearing age and children should just have two!. Oily fish include salmon, fresh tuna, sardines, herrings and mackerel!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
