Reason for an underactive thyroid?!

Question: Reason for an underactive thyroid!?
Hi I found out my thyroid is really underactive!. I am on meds now!. I have a protruding thyroid and had a scan!. It all looks good!. There is a 2mm cystic lookin lump on the right side of my thyroid gland but the doc said its nothing!. I asked him if the hypo was caused from Hashimatos or graves and he said probably but wasnt really sure!.
Does it matter that I dont really know why its so underactive and dou think that the cyst is ok!? I just found the doctor didnt really care!. Thanks heapsWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Yes you should have your antibodies tested, both of them, even if you have to go doctor shopping for a while!. Get some second opinions about the lump too!.

You may have primary hypo, where TSH is raised (most likely otherwise doc would not have put you on meds) - this is also the case for Hashimotos, although one can have this condition and "normal" blood tests too!.

You could have secondary hypo where TSH is low, but T4 is normal or raised - sometimes mistaken for hyPERthyroidism!.

You could have thyroid hormone resistance where TSH and all blood tests are "normal"!. It results in the cells being partially resistant to normal levels of circulating thyroid hormones!.

Either condition will result in the same treatment!. but it is very important to know if it is being caused by hashimotos because then you can try to lower the antibodies with thyroid hormone treatment and keep retesting to see if the levels are indeed going down!.

Cortisone (low dose) treatment in conjunction with thyroid replacement also lowers antibody levels!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Although low thyroid can be caused by a variety of maladies, by far the most common cause of simple hypothyroidism is an immune system attack against the thyroid-hormone forming tissue ( thyroxine hormone assembly apparatus of the thyroid gland )!.The reason for this seemingly bizarre occurrence of our immune system attacking a part of ourselves is not entirely clear!. It can be the result in part of trauma or infection damaging the thyroid gland, and the immune system attacking the damaged area as if it were a foreign invader!.

There is also good evidence to suggest that much of the problem is related to increasing pollution in the air, food, and water, hormone-disrupting chemicals which confuse the body's response!.
