Your hymen is a very thin bit of skin type substance that covers the entrance of your vagina, it can be broken doing loads of things such as sport etc and not necessarily just during sex!. To tell if its broken you could try having a little look yourself but to be honest it doesn't really matter if it is or isn't broken!.
The first time you have sex might be a bit painful anyway just because your not used to it and a little bit nervous, infact it can be painful for the first few times despite your hymen being broken!. Don't worry though, the pain isn't bad and if your with a guy that is uunderstanding and caring this shouldn't be a problem at all!.
