There is a slightly increased risk of breast cancer the longer your on it!. Most people don't experience any side effects from the pill, i know i didn't!. you can get more details on the pill from NHSdirect and also any alternatives that you might consider!.
The person above me is wrong, the pill does not affect your fertility long term, please do not listen to that! Also i didn't put on a pound on the pill!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The risks are very low for the pill if you're under 35 and a non-smoker!. To actually see birth control related deaths (probably from deep vein thrombosis) you can download the "Physician's Prescribing information" from any birth control manufacturer's website!. See the table entitled "Annual Number of Birth Related or Method Related Deaths!." This table says there are approx!. 1!.9 deaths per 100,000 women aged 30-34!. Women who do smoke in this age group have a death rate of 13!.5 per 100,000 women!. The highest death rate is those with no fertility method - these women most likely die from childbirth (14!.5 per 100,000)!. Childbirth is much more risky than taking birth control pills!.

You can also see Wikipedia's entry for Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Combined_or!.!.!.

As for non-hormonal birth control, there is a copper IUD which is inserted into your cervix!. This is effective for several years!. Usually doctors only recommend an IUD if a woman has already had all of the children she plans on having!. Of course there are condoms!. There are Sponges, but they're only 70% effective against pregnancy!. A diaphragm is also an option, but you need to be fitted for it (and in my opinion is a completely old fashioned method of birth control)!.

OCPs can be unsafe in older women smokers!. They should not be used in women with a history of blood clots, untreated high blood pressure, breast or uterine cancer, migraine headaches with focal neurological symptoms, known pregnancy, liver or cardiac disease!. The same side effects women experienced with early pills are still a problem for some women taking modern versions: headaches, nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, and weight gain!. Your OCP should have low estradiol (less than 50
