Question: When are women supposed to start having smear tests!?
I have heard lots of conflicting answers!. Some people have said you can ask to have one as soon as you are sexually active where as I have also been told you can't have one until your 25!.

In the UK, smear tests are offered to women once they reach the age of 25!. I think it's 20 in Scotland!. It is then done three yearly after that!. In the US, smear tests are offered to girls yearly once they reach the age of 18 or when they become sexually active (which ever comes first)!.
If you're in the UK and you are not 25 and wish to have a smear test, you can ask for one!. Most GP's won't refuse!. When they say you have to be 25, it just means that's when routine letters are sent out, offering/inviting you to have a smear test!.

Your doctor will tell you what he thinks!. It is supposed to be when you are sexually active!. Kids today are doing that at 12 so there has to be more protection and ways to prevent earlier life threatening illnesses!.

You should have one done every year, starting when you first become sexually active!. You don't have to (and it could be dangerous to) wait until you are 25, especially if your family has a history of ovarian or cervical cancer, or any other condition with the female reproductive system!. My mother developed cervical cancer when she was just 22 years old, so waiting until she was 25 could have killed her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
you don't have to wait on a docs letter saying your the right age now for a smear if you are sexually active then no matter what your age request one etc if not then 25 so it seems which seems very late on i mean yes sexual activity and stds do contribute to the majority of cervical cancer etc but they aren't the over all cause there are other factors Www@Answer-Health@Com
I was told by my midwife, health visitor, doctor and nurse that you should start having smears as soon as you are sexually active, and I live in the UK!. I think they say start at 24 years as a guide!. But if you are sexually active you should be having regular smear tests XxWww@Answer-Health@Com
25 is a old answer to when you need to get a Pap smear!. A friend of mine had cervical cancer at 19!. When you are sexually active or even as early as 16 you should have one!. If the doctor is still saying 25, change doctors!. Btw every year after 25!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Your supposed to start when your 20 (i had my 1st one this year)!.
Then it's every couple years after that for check ups!. But if you don't have regular sex I think it's only every 5 years you have to visit!.

It would be smart to begin them either when you become sexually active and/or had regular periods for a bout a year!. Don't wait until you're 25!. That could be a danger to your health (i!.e!. cervical cancer, uteran cancer, cysts, etc)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would pop along and get your first smear, in the States they are much more aggressive than we are here and do them much more often!. In many practices the nurse does the smears, so ask about that option!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You should go in for your first pelvic exam when you become sexually active, but there's no rule that you have to be a certain age!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
