It's not that bad!.

I was 15 when I got my first one too!. Your nurse will have you change into a hospital gown and then your doctor should come in the room in a little while!. First, the doctor will use a speculum (which is the clamp your mom mentioned) to see the inside!. Then she will take the q-tip and take a couple swabs of your cervix!. This is the most uncomfortable part, but it doesn't last that long!. Once that's over, she will stick two fingers in and feel around your vagina to make sure everything feels normal!. Lastly!.!. she will push down on your lower abdomen to feel your ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes!.!. and that's it!. The doctor will leave the room and let you get changed back into your regular clothes!.!.

BE SURE TO RELAX!. The only time it should hurt is when you are tensed up and aren't relaxing your muscles!. TRY TO GET YOUR MIND OFF OF IT!. If you're thinking about something random, it makes the situation seem a lot less uncomfortable and scary!. I guarantee you that your doctor will explain everything that they're doing step by step since this will be your first exam!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It does not take long at all!. Wear loose fitting clothes so that you can undress and dress quickly!. Having a woman doctor is less stressful so you can still make the change!. Good luck it does get easier when you know the procedure!. Most doctors will do their best to make you relax easier for you and easier for them!. You could just have a medical check up and ask about the procedure for next time!. Generally you only need the check every 2 years and it is not a pleasant process even for seniors but a female doctor is less threatening or so it seems!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

What your mom told you is correct!. The swabbing does not take long at all!. Maybe a few seconds!. The doctor will also examine your uterus and ovaries by placing two gloved fingers inside while pressing on your stomach!. They usually ask you questions during the procedure to take your mind off of it!.

If you have any questions, you might want to make a list now while you are thinking of them clearer!. Take it with you to the appointment and ask the doctor!.

I would question the need for a pap test!. You shouldn't be getting a pap test at 15 unless you started having sex at age 12!. Pap tests are a screening tool for cervical cancer!. Cervical cancer is caused by HPV which is an STD!. The reason why you should wait three years after first having sex before getting a pap test is that it takes at least that long (usually much longer) for cervical irregularities to develop!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try not to be so nervous!. Doctors that perform paps look at several vagina's a day!. You have nothing to be nervous about, it's a tad uncomfortable for a minute but you should be just fine right afterward! I promise they aren;t as scary as everyone thinks at first!. The best advice I have is just to relax and remember that they do this all the time, so it's not like they are trying to stare at your privates or anything! Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

thats exactly what they do , it take like a minute to do its fast, but make sure you tell them to use a small clamp for you since your young, and relax, dont tighten up, its a little uncomfortableWww@Answer-Health@Com

it's really quick!. they just swab to get some unkeratinized squamous epithelium (the cells inside the vagina) then its over!. don't be shy, talk to your mom again to get some comforting from her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are videos on youtube of it and if you don't want to see it on a real person they also show it on dummy's!.
Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yep, your mom is right!. And it is over very quickly; these guys do this for a living, they are fast!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Please don't be nervous!.

Your first appointment will go as follows:

Before the nurse takes the patient back to the examining room, she may ask the patient for a urine sample in order to diagnose urinary tract infections or pregnancy!. Even if a sample is not requested, it is a good idea to empty the bladder to aid in avoiding feelings of discomfort during the exam!. Once back in the exam room (which will be set up with a tray for the various tests), the patient will have to give her medical history!. She will be asked about such issues as family history of cancer of the female reproductive organs, past operations or hospitalizations, and any medications that the patient may be using!.

The doctor and nurse will now leave the room so the patient can get undressed!. She will either put on a hospital gown (maybe 2 if she wants to cover her back) or she will be given a paper top with a sheet covering her bottom half!. After she is finished covering up, she should sit on the exam table and wait for the doctor to come back!.

The Physical and External Genitalia Exams
During the exam, a nurse will also be in the room to assist the doctor!. The doctor will first examine the patient's breasts to check for any abnormalities!. He or she may also conduct a physical exam of the rest of the patient's body!. After this is done, the doctor will ask the patient to get into the stirrups!. The best way to do this is for the patient to put her feet in the stirrups one at a time, then slide her bottom down to the end of the table (towards the doctor)!. She should then slowly lie back!. The patient can put her gown down between her legs to cover herself up until the doctor is ready, at which point the Doctor may ask you to scoot your bottom closer to the edge of the table and once in position ask you to allow your knees to open and fall back!.
To examine the external genitalia, the doctor will use a couple of her gloved fingers to spread the lips apart!. The doctor will examine the structures of the vulva and will check the tone of the pelvic floor muscles!. If wanted, the patient may ask for a mirror to see her genitalia during the examination!.

Speculum Examination
Before starting the speculum exam, the doctor will warm the speculum to avoid any discomfort the patient may feel from a cold speculum!. The doctor will then insert one finger into the vagina to locate the cervix and to determine the angle of the vagina!. This is done so she will know the correct angle to insert the speculum!. A speculum is a metal or a plastic instrument that looks somewhat like a duck's bill!. The "bills" are inserted into the vagina and opened in order to spread the vaginal walls and visualize the cervix!. After the speculum has been opened, a cervical brush and then a spatula will be used to rub a sample of cells off the cervix!. This may cause the patient to experience some spotting after the exam, but it will not hurt!. The sample of cells is spread onto a slide and this is the Pap smear!. Any samples for testing for infections will be collected!. Some doctors screen for sexually transmitted diseases routinely!. However, most tests will only be done if there is a reason!. The speculum is then closed and removed from the patient's vagina!. There will be some clicking noises during the locking and unlocking of the speculum; these noises are routine, so there is no need to be concerned by them!.

Bimanual Exam
For this part of the exam, the doctor will lubricate their index and middle fingers with K-Y jelly to aid in the comfort of the patient during insertion into the vagina!. The doctor will place these two fingers on the cervix while placing her other hand on the patient's abdomen (over her uterus)!. he or she will then press down lightly, which does not feel much different from when a doctor presses on the abdomen alone!. Both hands are used to get a feeling for the size of the uterus!. The doctor may use the fingers inside the vagina to move the cervix around a little to check for any pain, as this would indicate pelvic inflammatory disease!. The doctor will then move two of his or her fingers inside the vagina to both the right and left sides of the patient's cervix!. He or she will then move the abdominal hand also a little to the right and left to feel for the size of the ovaries and to try to locate any abnormalities!. This whole exam may feel a little funny to the patient, but it won't hurt!. The patient can try not to tighten her abdominal muscles during the procedure to minimize the discomfort!. Some doctors may perform a rectal exam after the pelvic exam!. This consists of inserting a gloved finger into the rectum very briefly!.

After the Exam
After the doctor has finished the exam, the patient will need to get up and out of the stirrups!. The best way to do this is to stay lying down and push against the stirrups to straighten the knees!. The patient can then use her arms on the table to help herself up to a sitting position!. Some patients will hWww@Answer-Health@Com
