I have a different IUD, the Mirena. I've never had children. I'm really really happy with it. I never think about it or notice it at all. The only negative was that it hurt when they put it in. But that only took a couple minutes. To make it easier to put in, the doc gave me a pill to put in my vagina the night before he put in the IUD. The pill made the hole in my cervix open a little so it was easier to put in the IUD. The reason they often say that only women who have had children should get an IUD is that once a baby has gone through the cervix, it's easier to put the IUD in. But they CAN get it in even if you haven't had a baby. It's just harder to do--so if your doc doesn't suggest the cervical dilator pill (misoprostol), then ask about it. They'll be glad you did.
Have you asked the doctor about this yet? I think they only give IUDs to women who have already had children, especially considering the risk of permanent infertility.
There are other non-hormonal options of contraceptives. Film, foam, diaphragms, sponges, etc. They are just less effective, albeit possibly less painful.
