I've been on the depo shot since late december, and I experienced basically the same side effects you are describing. I had extreme mood swings and burst into tears at random times for no reason. I got mad at my boyfriend even though he had done nothing wrong. In addition to this, I have breakthrough bleeding for a month and a half before I went on an estrogen pill to control the bleeding. I have also decided to not have the shot once this is out of my system, and bit by bit the mood swings are getting better. I wish my doctor had told me of the possible side effects of this shot.
To help with your mood swings, I would suggest an estrogen supplement. I was on Estrace for about a month to control the btb, and it seemed to level my mood significantly. If you decide to look into this, your doctor might not have any information on it. If they are a lenient doc, they will probably be receptive to a trial of estrogen pill or patch. Since the depo shot is progesterone, the hormones in your body are out of whack and the estrogen balance seems to help it.
I think it's good you've decided to not have the shot again, I completely agree.
Hope this helps! :)

I was on the shot for two years, and yes I experienced similar side effects. After I stopped taking the shot, it took nearly a year to get my period back. I also gained a lot of weight while on it. I just recently got rid of my iud after having it two years and the same situation. It's the hormones they put in these things that do this to you. Depo makes your body think its pregnant. To give you a bit of perspective, when you are actually pregnant, there is enough hormones in your body to last a woman who's never been pregnant 150 years. And the downside to hormones, whether artificial or real, is how crappy they make you feel. I'd say use a non-hormonal contraceptive for a while, and let your body level things out on its own. Not all birth controls work for every woman.

Tried them all.
