Could you please answer my questions about Arnold Chiari Malformation TYPE ONE?!
Question: Could you please answer my questions about Arnold Chiari Malformation TYPE ONE?
I have some questions regarding Arnold Chiari Malformation (type one). If you could please answer as many questions as you know the answer to, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thank you.
1. Can Arnold Chiari Malformation type one be caused by advanced maternal age (age 35+ at birth of child)?
2. Is Arnold Chiari Malformation type one a neural tube defect?
3. Can Arnold Chiari Malformation type one be picked up in an Amniocentesis test?
Thank you!

No to all 3.
Edit: Type 1 IS NOT just an adult form! Type 1 refers to the fact that spina bifida is not involed which IS a NTD. I know several kids with Type 1.
I have ACM type 2, but have researched all of the types very thoroughly.
Hi - this link is good;
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/chiari-…
1. No, this condition (Type I) is usually present in early childhood, not necessarily even known about, but may present later in life. It is the adult form of this Malformation. No connection to maternal age/childbirth. Someone who presents with Type I in adulthood has had this condition for a long time previous to any symptoms.
2. No, it is a congenital malformation of the brain.
3. No, as Type I is the ADULT form; it is only Type II Chiari Malformation that is detectable by ultrasound (not amnio) during pregnancy, or at birth, or in early childhood.
Good luck.
Please go to some serious medical website -NOT DR GOGGLE!!!!!
For example --www.mayoclinic.com
or www.nlm.nih.gov (national library of medicine).
Of course you can check with a gyn/obs or a pediatrician - most of them have a lot of training in genetics these days.
