It may take a couple of years for your period to settle down into any kind of regular pattern. Even then you can have early or late periods for no real reason.
Yes you can use tampons throughout your period, esp if you feel more comfortable using them. Just remember to change them often even if they aren't really soiled.
If you start to suffer pain you may find it more comfortable to use towels - trial and error really. Whatever is best for you.
