They should administer a pregnancy test only if you haven't been using the shot or other methods of contraception. If you have been taking the shot on a regular basis, a pregnancy test is not necessary.
You should not be alarmed if you are spotting because many forms of hormonal contraceptives may cause that as well as other side affects. For instance, I tried Depo years ago and had the adverse affect to where I pretty much had a period for the whole duration (3 months). Some people just react differently to the hormones. But, just to be on the safe side, you should inform your doc about your concerns.
Depo causes spotting. You could certainly get tested, but the spotting doesn't necessarily mean anything.
