Yes, there's a possibility. There's a possibility for any woman -- it happens in 1 out of 10 women.
Should you freak out? No :-)

I have PCOS and live a completely normal life- it's definitely not a death sentence! MANY women live with it. Yeah, some symptoms can suck when *unmanaged* but that's the thing -- ALL the symptoms are manageable.

If irregular periods are your only symptom, then you probably don't have it. Lots of people have irregular periods.

Just take a look at the symptoms: http://pcos.about.com/od/pcos101/a/pcosy…

If you have the symptoms and are worried, then talk to your doctor. If you DO have PCOS then your doctor will simply start you on a program to help with symptoms.

If you keep fit and take care of yourself then you're not likely to get diabetes. You have to keep in mind -- many women with PCOS end up overweight.... obesity leads to diabetes... so, stay fit, stay healthy, and prevent diabetes.

Good luck :-)

(p.s. you don't need a check up "down there" like someone mentioned to find out if you have PCOS -- you don't need any sort of vaginal exam until you're sexually active, which many people don't know, but good doctors will respect that. You'll get bloodwork done and possibly a pelvic ultrasound which can be abdominal instead of vaginal.)

Don't be scared. There are lots of other symptoms of pcos. Why don't you ask your mom if you can go to the doctor and talk with her (or him) about it? Irregular periods are pretty common for the first several years, but I think you will feel better talking with someone about it. I think there are blood tests they can do for pcos? I'm not sure - that's why you need to talk with someone who does know! Good luck.

the best way to find out is to go to your doc. a good check up down there, and a few test is all you need. but since it is hereditary you havea higher chance of getting it than other people, so just be safe rather than sorry (:
