Abnormally heavy period: is there something wrong?!

Question: Abnormally heavy period: is there something wrong?
So that's it, I've started my period last saturday and they are extremely heavy: I keep soaking pads, I leak even if I wear nighttime maxi pads during day time and I have HORRIBLE cramps.
The thing is that usually, my period is very light. Like 3 drops of blood a day on a pad, something like that, and it usually lasts 8-9 days. How come now I have to change a pad every 2 hours? O.O Am I sick or something like this?

- I did NOT have sex. (never had it before anyways)
- I'm almost 16. Been having my period for exactly 1 year.
- Will this last 8-9 days too? Because if yes, I guess the cramps would have killed me before it finishes x(

Well actually the same thing happened to me, i went to the doctor and she said that its completely normal. Whats happening is your bleeding super heavy because your system is cleaning out.It usually happens around 15 yrs of age.

It isn't uncommon. You should still talk to a gynecologist regarding it. I had the same problem and was put on birth control to maintain it. It doesn't mean you're sick though however it could lead to things like Anemia later in life if not at least consulted. Not to scare you, since as I've said it's very common.
