Period stops, then comes back heavier for 3 weeks?!

Question: Period stops, then comes back heavier for 3 weeks?
About 3 weeks ago I started my period and it was light, but lasted about 4 days. After that it stopped for maybe 3 days, then came back heavier. That lasted maybe 3 days. Then It stopped, and returned 7 days later. This time it's really heavy and I'm getting terrible cramps.
I'm not pregnant, and I'm not on birth control.
Before I go to a doctor, can anyone help me?

I had something similar to that, and the doc told me it was probably the result of an anovulatory cycle, where you don't ovulate so your body has a weird period-like thing and gets a little out of whack. It happened to me around twice in the last 6 months, and I'm hoping it doesn't happen again, but it can be caused by a ton of things like stress and nutrition (I had just transferred schools so that might have been why for me, my body has always been sensitive). I had some normal periods between them and my last one was normal, thank God.
So if I were you, if you aren't in too much pain, I would actually wait until next month or even the month after that to see if it fixes itself. If you start feeling a ton of pain then that's different, or if it keeps happening within days of each other.
but if not they will probably tell you to go home and then wait again to see if it happens again, and do a Pap smear for good measure.
I'd just document it and see what happens. First time I went to the doc for it they just did a pap smear and told me to come back in four months.

If you go in, they will probably suggest that you go on birth control. That seems to be the fix-it-all for irregular cycles-- and I will say this. If it doesn't bother you insanely, don't do it. I went on them for 2 days and my body reacted horribly!
Unless you want to of course, it's up to you. But although it regulates your period, when you get off of them your period will go back to the way it was before even if it was irregular before. (plus having to deal with the irregularities actually caused by getting off them)

Doc says you can grow out of these anovulatory things.
They won't really check for uternine cancer or something crazy like that unless you are over 30 and other things start to happen, but they'll do a Pap smear for cervical if you've had sex and are worried about that-
BUT I still think it's the anovulatory thing. Especially if you are before the age of 30. If you are over 40 I would say it's probably peri-menopausal symptoms.

I'm supposed to go back in in march to try a 'different course of treatment' after informing them that the bc pills had me so sick. If my period is normal this month, I'll just deal with it being irregular due to whatever reasons, and stay natural. It's a pain, but I can deal.

If like 3 of your periods are like that in a row though, or if you experience a lot of pain next time as well, go on in- just dont let them talk you into anything you dont want to do- just make sure you are ok.

edited to add:
I'm not trying to say btw that birth control pills are bad, just that I had a bad experience. If I start experiencing a lot of pain regularly during my period, I'll deal with the trial and error period of finding the right one, but for right now the problem doesn't bother me enough to bother with that. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't sick or something. turns out it's pretty normal, and typical of "irregular cycles". Good luck!
