Heavy period with lots of clots?!

Question: Heavy period with lots of clots?
My little sister just turned 11 when she got her first period. She only had it once for a whole year but it was really heavy and had lots of clots and she complained about bad cramps. She said that banannas didn't help her that much, and she was really emotional. It lasted about a week, give or take a day. When she was 12, she had another couple of periods but they were extremely irregular. They varied between light and heavy with clots. Now in 2011 (she is still 12 but will turn 13 in July) they are still irregular, but she has them about once every 15 days. They start out light and as it progresses they turn heavier and with more clots, and then it eventually stops after 7 days or more. Is this normal for her? Mine was never like this.

Answers:

having your period that young makes it very common to be irregular. most people do not have a steady cycle until about the age of 16 or so. everyone is different. cramps with heavy flow are awful! if the pain is out of hand a trip to the doctor might be a good idea. in some cases with intense flow they can put you on birth control to try to make it steady. i understand many people dont believe in doing this, but in that case they can give you pain medication stronger than pamprin. if the decision is to for go the doctor taking three ibuprofen is the same as a low dose pain killer. good luck i hope this stage doesnt last too long for her!

sounds like endometriosis
