Are my side effects from birth control permanent?!

Question: Are my side effects from birth control permanent?
I started taking birth control (against the wishes of my homeopathic-loving mother, I should have listened to her) to regulate my insanely painful periods in August '10. I was 19 at the time. I went down to Planned Parenthood got generic Ortho Tri Cyclen. I started taking it and things were fine. My moods, my weight...all of it was good. Then I noticed about a month in I started getting HAIR all over my cheeks, which I NEVER had before. It was dark and not coarse but still very noticeable. And in addition to that, I was getting some pretty bad acne on my cheeks as well (something else I never had before - my skin was always very clear in that area).

I visited my gynecologist who told me your body needs time to "adjust" but still put me on the low dose of Ortho Tri Cyclen. I promptly had the hair lasered off, but it still kept coming back and the acne was not getting better. So despite what my gynecologist said, I ditched the pills at the beginning of January.

It's been over a month now and I'm still suffering with this hair growth and acne. I've done a lot of research on this and have found that this has happened to other people, but nothing about whether it stopped/if they found any relief. But I'm so upset about this, it's truly wrecking my self esteem. My face used to look beautiful compared to this. I'm at a loss about what to do.

Could someone please tell me if I permanently damaged my hormones or something? And if this isn't permanent, how long will it take for my hormones to go back to normal? In any case, I just want to feel confident/happy again and these problems to be gone.

Any help/advice would be very appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Answers:

Most likely the acne and facial hair growth is due to the extra progrestin the birth control pills have that your body was most likely not producing at such a high level. With time as your own hormones resume their cycle (it hasn't been very long...) the symptoms should clear up. For some people this could take up to a year. As for your painful periods, there are different types of birth control you can try that will have different levels of estrogen and progesterone, however I can certainly see being hesitant to try something different. Have you had your painful periods checked out by a gynecologist? If you have other symptoms such as pain with defecation during your period you may have something like endometriosis, which might require further treatment. I hope you feel better soon. Be well.

Wow. Never heard of that. In fact isn't ortho tri the one they advertise to make your skin lovely?
How do you know this is even related to the pill? That's my question. It could be a coincidence.
Anyway, I never had adverse side effects to the pill and I took it for over 20 years.
I'm so sorry.

Sounds very strange, never heard anything like it, I would say wait at leats 3months which gives your body time to adjust back its normal level of hormoones and if that still hasn't worked you should go and see a gyno

they should go away once you stopped
but i would wait 3 months then see if they nasty side effects stopped
good luck
im on ortho tri cyclen and i got bad acne the 1st month
but after the 3rd month it was gone
