EASY ALGEBRA QUESTIONS!?!

Question: EASY ALGEBRA QUESTIONS!?
I'm reviewing a practice midterm and I can't find what chapter in my book how to solve. I would prefer whoever answers these questions to focus on the word problem first because that seems to be the questions I am having most trouble with. Show all work and explain how you got your answer :) P.S. This is not homework it's practice and yes you have to do them all if you want to get 10 pts and best answer.

1) (2/5)x - (1/3)x = 2

3) A = (1/2)bh for h

Solve. If needed round money amounts to two decimal places and all other amounts to one decimal place.

4) The owners of a candy store want to sell, for $6 a pound, a mixture of chocolate-covered raisins, which usually sell for $3 per pound and chocolate-covered macadamia nuts which usually sell for $8 per pound. They have a 60-pound barrel of the raisins. How many pounds of the nuts should they mix with the barrel of raisins so that they hit their target value of $6 per pound for the mixture?

5)Due to a lack of funding, the number of students enrolled at butthole college went from 7000 last year to 4000 this year. Find the percent decrease in enrollment.

Thanks so much.

Answers:

1.
(2/5)x - (1/3)x = 2
Multiply through by 15:
10x - 5x = 30
5x = 30
x = 30/5
x = 6

2.
A = (1/2)bh
2A = bh
h = (2A) / b

3.
Suppose they add x pounds of nuts, to yield x+60 pounds of mixture, therefore:
Cost of raisins: $3 * 60
Cost of nuts: $8 * x
Total cost: $6 * (x + 60)
Therefore:
(3*60) + (8*x) = 6(x + 60)
180 + 8x = 6x + 360
8x - 6x = 360 - 180
2x = 180
x = 180/2
x = 90

5.
(7000 - 4000) / 7000 = 3000/7000 = 3/7 =~ 42.857%
