Going out to dinner with celiac?!

Question: Going out to dinner with celiac?
so, i'm 16, and next week i'm going out to dinner with friends for the first time since i've been diagnosed with celiac. i emailed the place we're going to and they told me they have no gluten free foods [any food that contains no gluten may have cross contamination]
so i'm just wondering if anyone has any tips?
thanks x

I hear your pain!
When in doubt, order the salad! Steamed veggies are also good.
Lots of vegetarian restaurants also cater for GF easily --- or if you go to a steakhouse - a piece of steak is safe too!
Pretty much steer clear of ALL SAUCES (wheat is often a thickener even in tomato sauce!) and anything fried is bad. Just try to think like a super model ---- grilled fish/steak/chicken etc. salad - hold the dressing or a side of steamed veggies and no dessert unless it has the word 'flourless' in the title!
Cross contamination is not normally a huge issue as most restaurants naturally keep veggies together etc. so you should be safe.

Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but there are ways to live with this disease. There are many great resources online, just google what you would like to know, such as tips on dining out with celiac's disease. Your are 100% correct about cross-contamination of foods so I suggest that you look for a restaurant that serves gluten free foods. There are a lot of places that do! I would definitely not risk going to a place if there are any chances of you eating foods that were cross contaminated with gluten. Also many places with Vegan foods should be a safe bet for you as I believe Gluten free foods are a must for them (but please double check that as I could be wrong with that). Since you were just diagnosed with this, things are going to seem very hard if not impossible to deal with, but as you make necessary lifestyle changes and become accustomed to it, things are going to become much easier for you and will eventually seem like they are second nature! Your doctor definitely is a great resource for you to utilize if you are confused or worried about anything. I know several people with Celiacs disease and although things are rough during the first year of diagnosis things definitely do become easier! GOOD LUCK!

I am a Nurse, but this is not medical advice!
