It normally takes several months at least for your internal and external tissues to shrink back to their normal state. Trying to force the process by heavy abdominal exercises won't help, since those muscles have been stretched a lot, and the flesh underneath them is also holding them out further than before.

You can start mild ab excercises pretty soon. One good one is to lie flat on your back with your knees raised and your feet flat on the carpet. Slowly push the small of your back down flat, hold a few seconds, then slowly release. Do a few reps of this, several times a day. After another week or so, you could add side-ab exercises, such as lying flat, raising a straight leg, and swinging it slowly to the floor on the opposite side. Do the same with the other leg. This is a stronger exercise than the previous one, so don't overdo it.

As an athlete, you have the advantage of a basically toned and slender body, and experience with physical fitness concepts.

Just be sure not to overeat, and do stay active. I think that after-baby weight gain often happens when the mother is more tied down at home and gets less exercise. It may be a little too early for strenuous horseback riding – ask your doctor – but you have a lot going for you as you "shrink".

In Indonesia, we use the traditional methods to flatten mother's belly after giving birth by wrapping it with a long white cloth as tight as possible (the cloth is usually 10 metres long). You tie one end of the cloth on a pillar and wrap the other end on your stomach as tight as possible around the belly by using the pillar as support. The mother usually wears this while consuming a specialized herbal drink for 40 days period (until the bleeding is over) to remove the remaining impurities in the womb. I think nowadays they use maternity girdle since it is more practical. However, it is not as effective as using a long cloth, since the girdle loosens over time. My mother had five daughters, and she uses it everytime. I think it works quite well. I don't know about the practice in your country, but maybe it's worth to try.

Yoga classes or even just videos on youtube helps. Up to you but Yoga really does help! Not only does it help you get back into shape but it helps with balance and stress. And that's what all mother needs!
