It's not true that your period stops in water.
It just seems that way as you don't bleed constantly so what small amount there is gets diluted by the water, but if you're heavy or if larger pieces of the uterus lining come out then people will notice, especially when you get out of the water. Vagina's don't have anything built in to detect water, and your uterus is inside you so it can't tell when you're in water to know to stop shedding, your period is determined by your menstrual cycle and water cannot override that.

If going swimming you need to use some sort of internal protection;
Tampons, menstrual cups, sponges or softcups.

Menstrual cups are the best option, as well as much safer and cleaner than tampons meaning you can wear them with very light flow or even before your period, you can wear them for 12 hours without risk of TSS or infections. They are smooth and flexible so although there is a learning curve they are generally easier and more comfortable to use. For swimming they're better as there is no string showing outside your body, don't absorb water, can lessen cramps, and don't leak like tampons.

Softcups, also safer and cleaner than tampons so no health risks thus can be worn with any flow for up to 12 hours, they can be a little tricky to use but folded they are thin and they are smooth so can be more comfortable to insert than tampons, they can leak but no more than tampons.

Tampons or sponges, you can actually get options like soft tampons like Beppy which are like synthetic sponge, they're shorter and softer than regular tampons so can be easier to insert, or wet tampons which are the same only with lubricant to make insertion easier. Normal tampons and sponges can be used, to make insertion easier get the smallest you can, lubricate, and masturbate as when aroused your vagina naturally lubricates, relaxes, opens and increases in size so it makes insertion a lot easier.

No that's so not true! You just don't notice because your underwater. Please don't get in that water unless you've got a tampon in!
