I'm scared to use a tampon?!

Question: I'm scared to use a tampon?
I'm 15 and a virgin and never been fingered or anything like that, so I guess I'm "tight". We are going to have the swimming unit in gym for a semester so I need to use a tampon soon. I just am really really scared it's going to hurt. Does it?

Answers:

For most women it does not hurt at all. Most hymens allow for small things such as tampons or fingers to be inserted and they only rip when large things such as penises are inserted.

You don't need to use tampons, you have other options like sponges, softcups or menstrual cups - menstrual cups are better as they're safer, cleaner, more comfortable, and more convenient as they can be worn with any flow, overnight, even before your period for up to 12 hours - they don't leak like tampons so much more reliable. You're not 'tight' even if you are a virgin and have never been fingered that doesn't matter as your vagina is no different to that of a non-virgin, sex doesn't stretch you out, your vagina becomes larger to allow the penis in during sex but then returns right back to normal after sex.

Using tampons can hurt because they're dry and absorbent so irritate and damage vaginal walls due to absorption of vaginal fluids and through friction, you can help this by making sure to use the lightest absorbency and only during full flow - never before your period or during light flow. Use cotton tampons such as Cottons rather than rayon tampons like Tampax as cotton is a lot softer so easier to insert, also these don't contain chemicals so no risk of irritation. Go for non-applicator which have rounder tips, they are also easier to use as less complicated and give more control over direction.

You can make insertion easier by using lubrication such as KY jelly or olive oil around the opening to your vagina, also masturbate as when aroused your vagina becomes more relaxed, open, lubricated and actually increases in size so makes insertion easier. Use a mirror to see where to put the tampon. Also try different positions, sitting on the toilet with legs apart is the easiest position but also try standing with one foot up on the toilet, squatting or laying down - you can always change to a more convenient position once you're comfortable with insertion.

If there is pain - other than soreness from insertion - more like cramps, and getting worse as you move about or sit, this means the tampon isn't far enough in. Basically vaginal walls close in on themselves, if the tampon isn't far enough vaginal walls will push against the tampon and as they're hard with no give they essentially push back - further up your vagina there are fewer nerves so this can't be felt as much. If this happens remove the tampon and try again with a fresh tampon later.

hey okay try not to worry much about this, everybody goes through this if im honest it will hurt at first but its not as much pain as such just uncomftable. start with small skinny tampons, try be relaxed when doing this as it will be easyer. if you still feel you cannot do it, talk to a close family member or friend or anyone you feel comftorble with. and dont panic every girl goes through this. its totally normal.

i used my tampon for the first time, and of course i am a virgin and stuff just like you. the tampons came with instructions, and i followed them and i was fine. it being your first time using one, you may feel some discomfort at first, but it should be fine. (: good luck!

personal experience

No, it doesn't hurt at all. Tampons can be scary but they're not bad at all.
If it makes you nervous, just use the regular ones instead of super.
And it's easier because you're not dry down there (gross I know) so no, it won't hurt.

No it doesn't hurt, but you have to push it ALL THE WAY IN. if you don't, it's super uncomfertable. Push it in all the way until your fingers touch your vagina.

Your 15 and never used a tampon? wow!
