What EXACTLY happens when you go for a Cervical Smear? (UK)?!

Question: What EXACTLY happens when you go for a Cervical Smear? (UK)?
I'm having my first smear next week. I'm 28 and a virgin. 2 different doctors have recommended that I have one done even though I've not been sexually active because the computer says I'm overdue for one. So instead of me worrying about it all the time I just bit the bullet and made an appointment.
What exactly happens when you go in? All the details please!

Answers:

So many women worry but the doctors do many on a daily basis so please just dont worry about it, its good your thinking and getting checked out instead of leaving it too late.

You will go in they will ask you to go behind a screen to remove your clothes from the waist down, if you wear a skirt usually they let you keep it on and just pull it up, but yes knickers have to come off too, then they will come over ask you to bend either 1 leg as far up as you can (so your knee is making its way towards your chin) then they will be able to insert a tiny spatula you wont feel anything i promise, then thats it, it takes longer to get undressed and re dressed than the actual exam itself, hope that helps anyway, just remember every women has to have it done, your not alone and whilst it is embarrasing theyve seen it all before!

as advised, wear a long full skirt. You go in, remove your underwear behind a screen and then lie on the couch on your back. Doctor/nurse will insert a device and you will feel a scraping sensation, bit uncomfortable but not painful. 10 seconds, job done.

BTW the appointment should not be when you have your period, test can't be done properly then.

virgins almost never get cervical cancer but the test is harmless so if they insist, might as well.

You do not need to have this test done if you are a virgin, ask your GP to take you off the list, then register for the test if and when you become sexually active.

Erm there really is no point in getting a cervical smear if you're not sexually active, the doctors probably just don't believe that you're a 28 year old virgin!!
