Hi Emma, im 18 years old, not sexually active and I had my first internal exam with a gynaecologist last Friday. It's nothing to worry about what so ever, honestly. Every woman is nervous or anxious beforehand. I'll go through what happened with me and hopefully it will reassure you:

Because I was admitted in an emergency the doctor and her assistant doctor came round and spoke to me, felt my stomach (I have ovarian cysts which is what caused the pain). She then asked if I had ever had an internal exam before and asked if I was reluctant to have one. I told her I had never had one and I think she could tell I was nervous and anxious about it. She told me to follow her into another room as we were on a ward with just a curtain shutting off the other woman in the room and going into another room she said would be more private. I went in and I got really really nervous. She told me to go behind the curtain and remove all my clothes from my waist down. This was the part when I started to really want to run away. Anyway, I did it, got up on the bed and laid down with the sheet covering me. The doctor called for a chaparone and the chaparone came in. Then the doctor asked if I was ready and I said yes. Both her and her chaparone were with me and I really started to feel embarassed. My doctor told me to bend my knees and put my feet together. She then told me to let my knees fall. This has got to be one of the most unusual feelings I have ever felt before. I am not sexually active therefore I have never had someone look at me like that before. I started to panick about how I looked down there but because mine was an emergency I had no time to prepare. The chaparone didnt look down there she looked at me and told me I was going to be ok. I felt the doctor touch me and then insert a speculum. I'll be honest and say it did hurt me but I have heard that whether your sexually active or not it will be uncomfortable. She kept saying sorry and I was doing well. Then she removed the speculum and inserted 2 of her fingers to feel the size of my cysts. This felt really uncomfortable but the pain wasnt unbearable. Then it was over. Literally, less than 5 minutes.

I was always worried about ever having anything like this done but as soon as she said 'That's it, well done' I realised its nothing to worry about at all. She didnt judge me and she was lovely. But make sure you let the doctor know its your first one and your anxious and they will be really supportive as my doctor was with me.

Good luck and please try not to worry as much. Your going to be fine! :)

Personal experience

She may just look, but if you're a virgin, there's no need for you to have a PAP test, and you can refuse if you wish. PAP tests are supposed to be voluntary, anyway. She'll probably just prescribe you birth control to help with the heavy periods. There probably will not be a nurse in the room if you have a female doctor, but if there is, ask for her to leave.

She might do a visual and internal exam. If she does it's best to let her. There might be a nurse in the room too, but you can ask for the nurse to leave.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about every woman goes through that.

please don't be embarrassed; she is a female and has periods too. To a doctor any part of your body is no more personal than your face.

get it sorted to get your life back.
