It's from when one period begins to the day the next one begins :)
It's counted like this on a period app on my iPod (just so I can keep track of thing :P )
Sorry, but since everyone else's is different, you'll have to kind of figure out how long yours normally last. I have an extremely irregular period that sometimes skips 2-3 months, but I know that when I get it, it'll last a week, and it'll always stop the day before a week is over and then start up one last time on the last day. You'll have to learn from experience how long yours normally last. I hope this helps!
First day to first day is generally how most professionals (MD's and such) figure it.
That is why when you go to an MD they will ask you when the first day of your last period was.
You want to know when it will begin, so you count from
the beginning.
