Dangerous Periods???!

Question: Dangerous Periods???
Ever since I can remember, i've had a really heavy flow. Even my first period was heavy. As I've gotten older, it's only gotten worse. I used to only use maxi tampons, but now I have to use several Super Maxi tampons at a time. This goes on for a full week without letting up. I'm afraid to go to the gynecologist because I've heard how uncomfortable it is to get "prodded". Recently, my periods have become violent. I have to hold my legs shut because my periods come out in contractions, like a burst. I have to close my legs from blowing out my tampon. Does anyone else have this problem? Or is it just me. If so, what do you suggest I do? I'm only 19, so I would prefer not to go to the doctor. Home remedies?

Answers:

I remembering when I was a young lass, traipsing about the grounds of my father's yorkshire estate, projectile vomiting sludge from my vagina. Ah what fun!

But as I digress. As a doctor, I can be quite certain when I tell you that this type of PMS is dangerous to you and everyone around you. You must be quarantined at once, and you'll want to seek the assistance of a priest (or representative of whatever faith you subscribe to), your cooter has most likely been taken hostage by a demon or imp-like beast. It will need to be exorcised immediately.

Hope this helps! Feel better sweetheart.

Honey I have the same problem now I had a regular flow before I had my second child now I go through one overnight maxi every hour with a tampon on top of that. I was told that it's my hormones. But since you have never gotten a pap I would. If you are sexually active you really need to. It's not as bad as people say, they can check for cervical cancer. I don't want to scare you just let you know the possibilities. It also depends on the doctor you have. Hope this helps.

I've always had heavy periods - I'd leak through a super-maxi tampon, night-time pad and clothing within 15 minutes - so I know how awkward it can be.

You HAVE to stop using tampons this way, you're seriously putting yourself at risk. So first things first - get a menstrual cup - these are far better for heavy flow than tampons, you will be able to go at least twice as long with a cup as with tampons, as they hold a lot more and because of light suction if they do leak it's not the full flood you get when tampons leak. Unlike tampons cups have no risk of TSS, infections or long-term risks, this also means cups can be worn safely overnight. Menstrual cups can even help lessen cramps and lessen flow.

You do need to see a gynaecologist too - you may not need a vaginal examination depending on what the underlying cause may be, or you may not only need a vaginal examination but also an ultrasound if they suspect something serious causing this. Sorry but either way it's something you have to do because this is not healthy - and it's more comfortable to get an examination than to deal with problem periods. It's really not that uncomfortable, most women get this done several times during their life time, as long as you are relaxed it's not painful just a little embarrassing to have your genitals on show like that - just consider that you're helping your health.

My suggestions;

See your doctor.
Check for problems; hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, polyps, fibroids, cysts or tumors. Demand treatment - this is easier said than done because often they will use the pill as a quick-fix, as it suppresses cycles it hides underlying causes for such problems, as well as limits your ability to care for sexual health and eradicates the emotional/mental benefits to menstrual cycles. In the case of heavy flow if it is caused by thick uterus lining then the pill will do nothing, even if the problem is hormonal it may not be that effective and may make your bleeding heavier. If you have a good doctor though they will work with you to find the cause and treatment options, if not then seek care elsewhere. If open to it you may also want to look into complimentary therapies such as acupuncture or chiropractic care which can help.

Medication.
If everything checks out okay with the doctor then I suggest taking tranexamic acid, you take three tablets a day for the first few days of your period and it can lessen your flow and length of your periods by up to half - you may also find the more often you take these the lighter your flow gets without needing to take these tablets. These are pretty much the best thing I've found to help, I can also go up to four months without taking them before my periods start getting really heavy again.

Diet.
Make sure to eat healthy, even changes to diet leading up to your period will help, make sure you're getting iron to make up for blood loss and as lack of iron is also a cause of heavy flow, I tend to eat a lot of iron-rich foods and avoid sugars leading up to my periods. Get plenty of magnesium, zinc and calcium for menstrual health, vitamin E to regulate flow, and vitamins A and C to regulate estrogen levels to lessen flow. Seaweed is also known to help as it is a source of iodine, which helps to revitalize the endocrine system, however if not up for eating seaweed then you can just take kelp capsules - most health stores will carry these and be able to advise you on dosage.

Herbal.
Coffee is a good way to lessen flow as it is a vasoconstrictor so constricts blood vessels in the uterus preventing heavy blood loss, it isn't a huge difference and for some it can cause things to get worse, but it does give a fairly immediate effect either way so worth a try. Look into taking herbal treatments daily throughout your cycle, particularly helpful are; chaste tree (tincture is best), evening primrose oil or black cohosh, these will help to regulate hormones to help prevent heavy periods, also drinking either vitex tea or a women's tea blend may help too.
